At 02:05hr on Monday 23 March 2020, Seahouses All Weather Lifeboat was requested to launch by UK Coastguard, to convey an ambulance crew to an ill male on Holy island, which was not coronavirus related. The causeway was closed by the tide, with high tide at Seahouses at 02:23hr that day, and 5 minutes later at Holy Island. The crew were paged and the lifeboat was quickly launched to stand by in the harbour, for the arrival of the ambulance.
Further information was then received from the North East Ambulance Service, via UK Coastguard, that a doctor on the island was attending the casualty, who’s condition had improved, and the ambulance cancelled. The Lifeboat was stood down, recovered and re-housed by 03:45hr that day.
Lifeboat Operation Manager Ian Clayton commented, “ On this occasion the RNLI were not required. A fully crewed lifeboat was quickly launched by full compliment of shore crew, all of whom were on station with minutes of being paged, despite the hour of the day.”
