At 13:11hr on Saturday 22nd February 2020, Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat was requested to launch to assist Howick and Seahouses Coastguard Rescue Teams at Beadnell Bay. A female walker had sustained a suspected fracture to her ankle and lower leg, south of the Long Nanny, and extraction by sea was considered to be the most appropriate option.
The beach in that area was soft and not suitable for a vehicle to access, and well away from the road where an ambulance was in attendance. Weather conditions were not good with strong squally snow and sleet showers, whipping up a choppy sea. It was decided to take the Inshore Lifeboat by road and launch at Beadnell Bay, north of the incident. On arrival, the amount of breaking surf made a transfer to the inshore lifeboat from the beach potentially difficult, so the lifeboat was released, and a Rescue Helicopter from Prestwick was called. The casualty was taken aboard the aircraft and airlifted to the road ambulance’s position, which then took her to hospital for treatment. The Lifeboat was recovered onto its trailer at Beadnell, and returned to Seahouses by road.
