Sunderland RNLI lifeboat recovers woman and continues searching for missing man


The volunteer crew at Sunderland Lifeboat Station are currently searching for a missing man. They have already recovered a woman who was with him.

The lifeboat was called to begin searching at around 4pm this afternoon (Monday 22 July). The woman was recovered by the lifeboat near Hendon and was taken ashore by the volunteer crew at Sunderland marina, from there she was taken to hospital by ambulance. Her present condition is unknown to the RNLI.

James Jamieson, Sunderland Lifeboat Operations Manager said: ‘Shortly after being called to an incident at Marsden, the volunteer crew were diverted to Hendon to begin searching for the man and woman.

‘We were stood down by the Coastguard as it became dark, both lifeboats and all our volunteers returned to the station at 8:20pm. Our thoughts are very much with the casualties and their friends and family.’

The search is being coordinated by the Coastguard, a search and rescue helicopter was also on scene.
