OSHKOSH, Wis. (Sept. 23, 2013) — U.S. Marines are responsible for responding to fire and emergency situations on military bases and airfields around the world as part of their mission. Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE:OSK), is meeting a critical equipment requirement with the new Oshkosh P-19 Replacement Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle, which will be showcased for the first time at Modern Day Marine in Quantico, Va., Sept. 25-27.

KENT, ENGLAND (September 23, 2013) – Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. company (NYSE: TXT), announced today a signed agreement with Heli-Charter Ltd for the first Bell 429 configured for Helicopter Air Ambulance (HAA) operations in the United Kingdom. The recently appointed Bell Helicopter Customer Support Facility and Independent Representative held the grand opening of its new facility adjacent to Manston International Airport in Kent on September 21.

ABB secures $25 million order from Nordic Yards

September 20, 2013—ABB has won an order worth around $25 million to supply its Azipod marine propulsion system and complete electric power plants for two new rescue and salvage icebreakers currently under construction at German shipbuilder Nordic Yards GmbH. The new vessels, owned by Russia’s State Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (SMRCC), will be used for patrols and rescue operations in offshore oil-and-gas fields. They will be fitted with equipment for search and rescue tasks and oil-spill response.

It was 1841 and one of the whaleships heading out of New Bedford on the morning tide carried a new crewman on his first whale hunt. Herman Melville was to become famous as the author of a great classic nautical novel, Moby Dick , that has become a popular read down generations and across the world. As Herman Melville watched the receding shore, a new whale ship was being launched from a New Bedford yard.

NASA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are collaborating on a new radar device that detects heartbeats of victims trapped in wreckage. The agencies will demonstrate and discuss the device at 10:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Virginia Task Force 1 Training Facility at 9850 Furnace Road (use 9900 for GPS) in Lorton, Va.

Costa Concordia righting effort gets underway

Costa Concordia wreck is upright

September 17, 2013—The Titan Salvage/Micoperi consortium has announced that the Costa Concordia parbuckling operation has been successfully completed. The wreck of the cruise ship is now upright and resting safely on the specially built artificial sea bed, at a depth of approximately 30 meters. The ship will now be thoroughly inspected and a search will be made for the bodies of two victims who remain unaccounted for following the January 2012 grounding and capsizing of the vessel.

Mudeford RNLI launch to a ‘Mayday’.

Mudeford RNLI were tasked to assist a 6m RIB which had put a mayday request to the coastguard on Sunday 16 September. The boat and three people on board were on their way back to Poole from Yarmouth when they got caught in extremely heavy weather conditions and fearing that their boat was going to capsize, put in the distress call.
