Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat launches to lone sailor update 2

Mine Head Coast Guard received a call for assistance at 3:30am this morning, 25 March 2013, from a lone sailor on passage from the UK. Ballycotton lifeboat launched at 3:45am and proceeded to the known position of the 6.5 metre vessel, which was approx. 38 miles east south east of Ballycotton off the East Cork coast. The yacht was still under steam and the RNLI lifeboat reached the vessel at 5:25am. Two crew members were placed aboard the yacht and the yachtsman was transferred to the Ballycotton RNLI lifeboat where his condition was assessed. It was decided to have the casualty air lifted and the Waterford based Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 117, was requested to launch. The helicopter rendezvoused with Ballycotton lifeboat at 06:50am, approx. 25 miles off Ballycotton. The casualty was air lifted to Waterford airport where an ambulance has been requested for 07:30am. The yacht is sailing under its own steam, with two lifeboat crew members aboard and the Ballycotton lifeboat accompanying it.

It is expected to reach the Ballycotton lifeboat at approx. 07:00am.

Lifesavers play at the AVIVA
Five crew from the Arranmore RNLI Lifeboat in County Donegal will make history on Tuesday 26th March. The crew, who are also members of the Arranmore Pipe band will play at the match between Ireland and Austria when they join their colleagues in the Pipe band to play at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin for the match between Ireland and Austria. The pipe band was invited to play by FAI CEO John Delaney, when he visited the Arranmore United soccer club last year and was entertained by the pipe band. The pipe band will herald the team on to the pitch, play the Irish National Anthem and will also play at the half time interval.

The GI-South East Asia (GI-SEA) Programme was officially launched on 21 March 2013 when IMO and IPIECA signed a Statement of Intent on Establishing the GI-SEA Programme on Oil Spill Preparedness and Response.

IMO and the IPIECA, the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues, have jointly launched a new Global Initiative (GI) programme aimed at improving the oil spill preparedness and response capabilities in south east Asia, at a regional workshop that took place from 20 to 21 March 2013 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop and launch event was attended by more than 70 high-level representatives from Government and the maritime, oil and gas industry from countries across the south east Asia region.

But you don’t have to be racing Marion to Bermuda or Marblehead to Halifax or Annapolis to Newport or any other offshore race to need this course.

CARGO VESSEL AGROUND AT FARNE ISLANDS

At 04.45hr on Saturday 16 March 2013, Seahouses Lifeboat was requested to launch by Humber Coastguard following a distress call from the 80m cargo vessel “Danio”, which had run aground near the Little Harcar rock at the Farne Islands. There were six crew aboard, and the Lifeboat was requested to assess the situation and take off the crew if required.
