First rescue for new Loch Ness lifeboat.

A yacht with engine failure and signs of smoke lead to the first service launch for the new RNLI Loch Ness lifeboat, B737 Thelma Glossop.

The volunteer crew at Loch Ness RNLI lifeboat station were paged to launch this afternoon (Sunday 25th September 2011) at 1.44pm after Aberdeen Coastguard received a distress call from a yacht that had experienced engine failure and was showing signs of smoke from the engine room.

BROKEN DISTRESS CALL HEARD ON VHF RADIO

At 13.39hr on Sunday 25th September 2011, a broken distress call was heard of the marine VHF distress radio channel (Ch 16), from a vessel possibly in Beadnell Bay in what appeared to be serious difficulty. Humber Coastguard were unable to raise the caller back on either Ch 16 or Ch 67. Seahouses Lifeboat Operations Manager had also heard the message, contacted Humber Coastguard immediately. It was agreed to launch both Seahouses Lifeboats without further delay.

NSR Updates

NSR

North Shore Rescue is a founding organization for the provision of the Helicopter Flight Rescue Systems (or HFRS). HFRS is used to insert/extract rescuers into difficult terrain, as well as to extract stranded or injured patients. It is quick, efficient and very safe. NSR has performed over 100 of these specialized rescues since its inception in 1996. NSR is a leader in North America in this type of rescue.

Summary of the Past Week

The last week has been a busy one, so here is a quick summary.

Thursday, September 8th

A young female fell on Seymour hit her head and became unconscious. BCAS was able to get to her location and package the patient. NSR flew in and long-lined the subject in our aerial-rescue-platform (ARP) to the waiting air ambulance in the Seymour parking lot. She was treated in children’s hospital for a number of days in critical care for a severe concussion.
